In collectivistic cultures such as Japan, employees prefer to be recognised in groups i.e., as a team. Team awards drive motivation of employees. Individual awards make them feel alienated from the group. Whereas in individualistic cultures such as USA, people give more importance to individual awards. Culture definitely has an influence on performance appraisal. The procedures used for performance appraisal depend on the culture. Some prefer monetary benefits where as some prefer other benfits too.
