If you prepared KNO3 and CaNO32 solutions of exactly the sam
If you prepared KNO3 and Ca(NO3)2 solutions of exactly the same molalities, which solution will have the higher boiling point?
Solution
elevation in boiling point = i x m x Kb
Kb = boiling constant;
So, the elevation in boiling point is directly propotional to product of vanthoff factor and molality.
Since; here molarity is same; the elevation in boiling point depends on vanthoff factor
vanthoff factor depends on number of ions produced in its solution.
KNO3 produce 2 ions, whereas Ca(NO3)2 produce 3 ions.
So, boiling point is greater for Ca(NO3)2
