What is the function of the plasma membrane? A) carries hereditary information B) the packaging and shipping center of the cell C) determine which materials enter and leave the cell D) gives plant cell shape and support E) manufactures proteins What is the primary function of calcium salts in bones? A) allows the bone to bend a little without breaking B) gives bone its rigidity C) gives bone a \"white\" appearance D) allows muscles to attach in key locations on the bone E) all of these In the diagram below, the container has been divide into two compartments that are separated by a semi permeable membrane. The membrane is permeable to water and glucose molecules. In which direction will there be NET movement of glucose? A) A rightarrow B B) B rightarrow A C) both directions D) neither direction Osmosis is best described as A) The diffusion of solute through a semipermeable membrane from a region of high solute concentration to a region of low solute concentration. B) The diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane from a region of low water concentration to a region of high water concentration. C) The diffusion of solute through a semipermeable membrane from a region of low solute concentration to a region of high solute concentration. D) The diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane from a region of high water concentration to a region of low water concentration. E) The diffusion of gas through a semipermeable membrane. You place an \"artificial cell\" in a beaker of distilled water for 30 minutes. The result of this experiment revealed that A) starch and salt molecules diffused through the cell membrane B) water and salt molecules diffused through the cell membrane C) starch and salt molecules did not diffuse through the cell membrane D) only starch molecules diffused through the cell membrane E) only salt molecules diffused through the cell membrane

Solution

1. What is the function of the plasma membrane?

Plasma membrane is made-up of Lipids and proteins. The proteins will be enclosed inside the phospholipids bilayer. Ion channel pumps are also present inside the plasma membrane. All these features determine the role of plasma membrane is to maintain the movement of material across the membrane

Option C is correct (determines which material enter and leave cells)

2. What is the primary function of calcium salts in bones?

Bones are made of calcium which helps them to make them rigid from inside. Calcium helps in flexibility of bones also. It helps in the muscle and bone attachment and localization of the structure. Because of calcium (calcium phosphate) the color of bones are white.

Option E. is correct (All of these)

3. In the diagram below, the container has been dividing into two compartments that are separated by a semi permeable membrane. The membrane is permeable to water and glucose molecules, In which direction will there be NET movement of glucose?

In the osmosis the solvent moves from higher concentration to lower concentration of solvent. Dissolved component will not move across the membrane. So here the A side have 5% glucose concentration and B side have 10% glucose concentration. It means the water (solvent) concentration on “A” side is 95% and “B” side have 90%. As per phenomenon the water will move from side A to side B.

Option A. is correct ( A --> B )

4. Osmosis is best described as :-

It the process in which solvent (Water) molecules moves from higher concentration to lower concentration of solvent. Dissolved component (Solute) will not move across the concentration gradient.

Option D. is correct (Movement of water from higher concentration to lower concentration of water across semipermeable membrane)

 What is the function of the plasma membrane? A) carries hereditary information B) the packaging and shipping center of the cell C) determine which materials en
