You are conducting a study to determine the importance of brand names and features of smartphones.
a) What types of questions would you use – open-ended, closed-ended, scaled? Justify your choice.
b) Suggest six to eight questions you would ask, and in what sequence you would ask them.
c) Show how these questions should appear on the questionnaire (write them out as a Likert-type scale, semantic differential scale, ranking, etc.) and justify your choice.
Solution
a) Depending upon the obejctive of research a questionnaire is selected. In case you are looking for answers related to one single brand, you may use scaled questions. e.g. Rate the battery performance on a sclae of 10. In case you have more than one brand and the data collection is much, then go for closed ended questions. e.g. which among the following would you prefer most in terms of battery.
b) the questions can be as follows:
1. Do you use a smartphone
2. Which brand are you presently using
3. Rate your satisfaction level
4. Which among the following brand would you rate most reliable
5. Rate the following features in terms of most important to least important while buying a smartphone( 1 being the highest, 5 being the lowest)
6. Which feature among the following do you think can be compromised?
You may further add questions related to discounts and price range if you intend to do research on those aspects as well.
c) the following questions would be on nominal scale:
1. Do you use a smartphone
2. Which brand are you presently using
4. Which among the following brand would you rate most reliable
6. Which feature among the following do you think can be compromised?
the third question (i.e. Rate your satisfaction level) can be asked on likert scale or semantic differenatial
3. Rate your satisfaction level
(a) Highly satisfied (b) satisfied (c) neutral (d) dissatisfied (e) Highly dissatisfied
OR
SATISFIED (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)DISSATISFIED
Question 5th and 6th can be on interval scale. question 6th can come in both the categories depending upon the type of research or the type of options.
| (a) Highly satisfied (b) satisfied (c) neutral (d) dissatisfied (e) Highly dissatisfied OR SATISFIED (1) (2) (3) (4) (5)DISSATISFIED |
