Explain how you can use electronegativity to determine if a bond is nonpolar, polar, or ionic. Explain how geometry can determine whether or not a molecule is polar even if it contains polar ponds.
Explain how you can use electronegativity to determine if a bond is nonpolar, polar, or ionic. Explain how geometry can determine whether or not a molecule is polar even if it contains polar ponds.

Solution

(a)

A covalent bond between two similar atoms is non polar.

(b)

A bond between two different atoms with electronegativity difference of less than 1.7 is polar bond.

(c)

A bond between two different atoms with electronegativity difference of more than 1.7 is ionic bond.

(d)

A molecule having polar bonds, in which the central atoms is attached similar terminal atoms and has regular geometry like linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, trigonal bipyramida, octahedral etc. is non polar molecule.

ex:

BeCl2, BCl3,CH4, PCl5, SF6 are molecules with polar bonds but are non polar molecules.
