One of the most influential books on problem solving titled How To Solve It [Pol57], was written by the Hungarian-American mathematician George Polya (1887-1985). Polya summarized his ideas in a four-point summary Find this summary on the Web or, better yet, in his book, and compare it with the plan outlined in Section 1.2. What do they have in common? How are they different?Solution
According to Poyla, the princliples for Problem solving are:
The plan outlined in the Section 1.2 holds these steps
Summarizing Polya\'s approach.... The first step is \"Understanding the Problem\"
It means whenver a Problem is stated, the first thing to do is clearly understand the Problem so that the ideas for solving it need to be encountered.Clearly examine the Given Problem and understand it before solving it
In the given problem identify what is the unknown, what is the data and what are the conditions given
Analyze whether the condition is satisfied or sufficient or insufficient or redundant or a contradiction inorder to find the unknown identified
Figure it out if needed and seperate them into various parts if necessary
The second step is \"Devising the Plan\"
A proper plan for solving the Algorithm need to be devised.Check whether the same problem has been encountered before in a different manner and whether any theorm of that can be applied to the present problem
Identify whether same unknown is present in a familiar problem. If it is identified then check whether we can use the result,or the method used or any other auxiliary elements need to be introduced by us along with the known results
If the probelm proposed cannot be solved then, try to solve a portion of it or some related part of it.If other data is appropriate to determine the unknown then check whether the unknown and the appropriate data are nearer to each other for solving the problem\'
The third step is CArrying the Plan
After analysing the problem, layout proper methodology t carry it out
It means implement the algorithm inorder to find the unknown i.e.,solve the necessary problem
Each step need to be clearly mentioned and check them to be correct
Prove that the steps carried out are correct for the Problem
The final step is \"Looking back\"
Looking back means the solution\'s perfectness.Examine the solution obtained.Check whether it is the result we need to solve for the proposed problem
Check each arguement
Find out whether the solution can be obtained in any other way or approach. If so show it in a glance and identify whether same soultion for the unknown could be obtained
Similarities in both Approaches
Differences
