An automobile company plans to put a temperature sensor in the cylinders of their internal combustion engines to control the combustion process to reduce emissions. As an engineer working for this company, would you recommend a bimetallic sensor, a thermocouple, or a resistance temperature detector (RTD)?
Solution
Temperature ranges of these sensors are
Bimetalic sensor have -70 to 50 C and 100-550 C
RTD have range of -195 C to 660 C
thermocouple have range of -270 C to 1700 C
In internal combustion engine cylinder the temperature can rise 700 C or more
So thermocouple will be suitable for this application
