1. 1.Does VC increase or decrease for a taller person? Why would height affect vital capacity?
2. Does VC increase or decrease with age? Why do you think this might be the case?
Define Forced Expiratory Volume (FEV).
How do the Subject’s FEVx values compare to the average normal values per Table 13.1?
FEV1 less than same as greater than
FEV2 less than same as greater than
FEV3 less than same as greater than
Is it possible for a Subject to have a vital capacity (single stage) within normal range but a
value for FEV1 below normal range? Explain your answer.
Define Maximal Voluntary Ventilation (MVV).
Asthmatics tend to have their smaller airways narrowed by smooth muscle constriction, thickening of the epithelial walls due to inflammation, and mucous secretion. How would this affect vital capacity, FEV1, and MVV?
Bronchodilator drugs open up airways and clear mucous. How would this affect the FEVand MVV measurements
Solution
VC increase for a tall person. In taller individuals, thoracic cavity size is more which allows the lung to expand fully. Since the lungs are larger, the surface area of the lungs will be more, which will result in increased lung volumes of the respiratory cycle. Hence taller individuals will have the more vital capacity.
Note: As per the guidelines we can answer the only first question. So, I did not answer the remaining questions. Hope you can understand.
