Part of your job as an air pollution control engineer is to periodically test for acid rain. You need a supply of pH strips for the study you are conducting this month. You go through about 150 pH strips per week. A box of 100 pH strips costs $15. A box of 200 pH strips costs $25. Which is the better deal, and how much will a 4-week supply cost? A. Box of 100, $45 B. Box of 100, $60 C. Box of 200, $75 D. Box of 100, $90 E. Box of 200, $100
Solution
Since requirement of strips for a week = 150 pH
So, requirement of strips for 4 weeks = 4 * 150 = 600
Now, cost of 600 strips for 100 per box = 6 * $ 15 = $ 90
Cost of 600 strips for 200 per box = 3 *$ 25 = $ 75
Since cost of 600 strips is less for 200 per box than 100 per box.
Hence, best deal is to purchase 3 boxes of box of 200 with cost $ 75.
