A scientist has a beaker containing 20 mL of a solution containing 20% acid. To dilute this, she adds pure water.

a. Write an equation for the concentration in the beaker after adding n mL of water.

b. Find the concentration if 10 mL of water has been added.

c. How many mL of water must be added to obtain a 4% solution?

d. What is the behavior as n , and what is the physical significance of this?

Solution

(a) we know that acid + acid = acid

So, 0.20*20 + 0*n = x(20+n)

=>4=20x+nx

(b)n=10

=>4=20x+nx=20x+10x=30x

=> x=4/30=0.133

so concentration is 13.3%

(c)x=4%=0.04

=>4=20x+nx

=> 4=20*0.04+0.04n=0.8+0.04n

=>3.2=0.04n

=>n=3.2/0.04=80 ml

(d) as n , as more water added concentration tends to 0

=> x 0
