A sample of nitrogen gas occupies a volume of 1652 mL at 300

A sample of nitrogen gas occupies a volume of 1652 mL at 30.0 oC and 820 mm Hg. What volume will the nitrogen gas occupy at 0 oC, and 1 atm of pressure?

1606 mL

   1.21 L

1825 mL

0.375 L

A.

1606 mL

B.

   1.21 L

C.

1825 mL

D.

0.375 L

Solution

Using ideal gas equation , we have

P1*V1/T1 = P2*V2/T2

or

V2 (N2 gas) = ( P1*V1*T2 ) / ( T1*P2 )

where

P1 = 820 mmHg / 760 mmHg/atm = 1.079 atm

V1 = 1652 ml

T1 = 30.0 + 273 = 303 K

P2 = 1.0 atm

T2 = 0.0 + 273 = 273 K

thus putting these value in

V2 (N2 gas) = ( P1*V1*T2 ) / ( T1*P2 )

we get

V2 (N2 gas) = ( 1.079 x 1652 x 273 ) / ( 303 x 1 ) = 486601 / 303 = 1606 ml

thus

the correct answer is :

A : 1606 ml

A sample of nitrogen gas occupies a volume of 1652 mL at 30.0 oC and 820 mm Hg. What volume will the nitrogen gas occupy at 0 oC, and 1 atm of pressure? 1606 mL
