The case is based on Kasey Fuentes, who supports instructors and student users at a local community college. Kasey received a call from a teaching lab assistant who reported that the hard disk in one of the lab PCs was making an unusual noise. Kasey arrived at the lab and listened to the hard drive, which was making a high-pitched whine. Kasey knew that an unusual noise from a hard disk can be one of the first signs that the drive is on the verge of failure. She asked the lab o assistant whether the PC exhibited any other symptoms that might indicate a drive failure. Solution

In the above case, I would have first tried to boot the computer from the hard disk itself. If it failed then I would have gone for testing it as Kasey has done it with a WinDFT utility software otherwise. If the test turned up to be positive and the noise persisted, I would have gone for opening up the chassis of the CPU. Then I would check for the fan motor. If still, the noise persisted then I would have checked the SMPS by replacing it with a new one.
