Describe the sequence of weather events that a city would experience with the passage of an idealized, mature mid latitude cyclone that has not developed an occluded front. Assume that the center of the cyclone is moving west to east and is 150 miles to the north of the city. Sketching a diagram may be helpful.

Solution

In midlatitude cyclone there is a convergence of warm air from south and cold air from north where the warm air rises up and cold air occupies lower space. And both fronts twirl round each other. As the centre of the cyclone is moving from west to east, and is to the north of city, the origin of cyclone will be north west of city and wind will move towards southern direction. As the warm front comes near to city, there will be decreased visibility and clouds will appear spreading at more lower level in troposphere. In sequence of events, light rain will come in very fine droplets and later on will become intense rain. After high cirrus cloud strands in the sky, we will be able to see middle and lower levels of clouds scattered in sky. Then again we will be in a warm sector as the wind will blow to south west. Clouds will appear less uniform. Wind will be strong due to passage of cold front and visibility will enhance. Rain will get less intense with thunderstorms. As the wind will continue to move towards north west in a twirl, sky will get clearer.
