Some ideal gas is sealed in a piston with initial pressure of 200kPa and initial volume of 0.1m^3. Then, the gas in the piston goes through adiabatic expansion and reaches final volume of 0.2m^3. Given surrounding pressure at 1 atm, determine the work done on the piston by surrounding.

Solution

Work done by gas should be calculated by taking adiabatic process.

But here work done by atmosphere has been asked which is equal to

work = -P0 * (V2- V1)= - 101.325 KPa * ( 0.2-0.1) m3

=-10.1325 KJ
