The three content motivation theories work on a common approach which is identifying the needs of the employees. Once identified the needs are made the basis for working on the motivation of the employees.

They are different because they work on the different categories of the needs. Hierarchy needs of Maslow decribe the needs in five categories and emphasizes on identifying the needs of the employee and motivating her/her accordingly. These needs are psychological needs, safety needs, social needs, esteem needs and self actualization needs. The two factor theory focussed on factors that satisfied and factors that dissatisfied the employees. And the ERG theory was based on existence needs, relatedness needs and growth needs.
