A test specimen in a tensile test has a gage length of 10 in

A test specimen in a tensile test has a gage length of 1.0 in and an area = 0.5 in^2. During the test the specimen yields under a load of 44,000 lb. The con-responding gage length = 1.0064 in. The maximum load of 70,000 ib is reached at a gage length = 1.60 in. Determine the modulus of elasticity.

Solution

modulus of elasticity = stress / strain

stress= 44000 / 0.5 , strain = 0.0064

modulus of elasticity = [ 44000 / 0.5 ] / 0.0064

= 88000/ 0.0064
