A finely ground mixture of one half salt and one half sand i

A finely ground mixture of one half salt and one half sand is to be seperated by adding 750kg of water to dissolve the salt and then filtering the salt solution from the insoluble sand. The resulting salt solution can then be seperated by distillation of 680kg of water, leaving a final solution, which is 89 percent salt and 11 percent water. Determine the mass of sand in the original mixture. Include a flow diagram of the systems and table of equations.

Solution

finally mass of water in solution = 750 - 680 = 70 kg

now mass of salt = 70 x 89/11 = 566.36 kg

mass of sand in original mixture = 566.36 kg

A finely ground mixture of one half salt and one half sand is to be seperated by adding 750kg of water to dissolve the salt and then filtering the salt solution
