consider the reaction

3CH4(g) yields C3H8(g)+2H2(g)

A) using data from appendix c in the textbook, calculate delta G at 298 K

B)Calculate delta G at 298 K if the reaction mixture consists of 40 atm of CH4, .015 atm of C3H8, and 1.9*10^-2 atm of H2

Solution

Calculate dG:

3CH4(g) --> C3H8(g)+2H2(g)

dG = Gproducts- Greactants

dG = (C3H8 2*H2) - (3*CH4)

dG = (-23.4 + 2*0) - (3*-50.5) = 128.9 kJ/mol

dG =  128.9 kJ/mol

B)Calculate delta G at 298 K if the reaction mixture consists of 40 atm of CH4, .015 atm of C3H8, and 1.9*10^-2 atm of H2

dG = dG + RT*ln(Q)

Q = P-C3H8 * P-H2 ^2 / (P-CH4)^3

Q = (0.015)((1.9*10^-2)^2) / (40^3) = 8.460*10^-11

dG = dG + RT*ln(Q)

dG = 128.9*10^3 + 8.314*298*ln(8.460*10^-11)

dG = 71437.45 J/mol = 71.437 kJ/mol roundup -- > 72 kJ/mol
