Lymph from the intestinal trunk, referred to as chyle, drains into the lower end of the thoracic duct. Whenever there is trauma to the thoracic, it may cause a leak in the thoracic duct, and effuse se the chyle lymphatic fluid in the pleural space. Chyle appears in the left side because drainage from all parts of the body except the upper quadrant is collected into the thoracic which is on the left side. Pain is also therefore experienced only on the left, not the right side.
