Describe how Motivation 2.0 fostered Type X behavior and Motivation 3.0 fosters Type I behavior.

Is Type X or Type I behavior \"better\" or more successful?

Solution

Motivation 2.0 is concerned with external rewards and punishment and is concerned with the carrot and stock policy. It specifies that external stimulants which can be in the form of rewards or punishments are used for motivation of individuals. Due to the external factors, it fostered Type X (Extrinsic) behavior which was primarily reactionary in nature.

While Motivation 3.0 is mainly concerned about the quality of the work or activity which becomes a source of satisfaction for the employee. Motivation 3.0 is concerned with making the work more engaging, ensuring employee gets more freedom and the work appeals to his desire to contribute to something more meaningful. This promotes Type I (Intrinsic) behavior wherein the employee is self-motivated and derives satisfaction in the conduct of the activity itself.

Type X can be successful in the short run and help in achieving short term goals. However in the long run, external stimuli is difficult to sustain and it also does not help in mastering any activity and long term satisfaction. So Type I behavior, based on intrinsic drive and satisfaction, is definitely more successful.
