Why is a mixture of alcohol and water used, rather than simply water itself, to saponify the fat or oil to produce soap?

Solution

you add the ethanol to allow the oil to mix with the solution because water and oil do not mix however if you add ethanol to the mixture it will mix with the oil to form a solution.
