There is a major rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan. Alumni from both schools are claiming there is a difference between the batting averages of their baseball players.

A sample of 60 Ohio State player\'s averages was .400 with a standard deviation of .05

A sample of 50 Michigan player\'s averages was .390 with a standard deviation of .04

Conduct the following test of hypothesis using the .05 significance level.

Calculated z-value of 1.80.

What is the p-value?

Solution

We need to understand that the null hypothesis ( or the hypothesis we intend to reject) would be :

Ho : mean1 = mean2

Ha : Mean1 and Mean2 are different

Since, there is an equality sign in the null hypothesis, we do a two-tailed test to check the hypothesis.

Since, the z-value is already calculated = 1.80

p-value for the above z-value = 0.07186 which is > 0.05

So,

the null hypothesis can\'t be rejected statistically

Hope this helps.
