Test for sulfates
In the above barium chloride tests, we see pure alum with BaCl2 produces cloudy precipitate of BaSO4 in solution. Sulfate present.
When heated the test gave no change as no formation of BaSO4 in this case occured. Sulfate absent
When after heating more is added, the sample gave cloudyness again, due to formation of fresh alum which reacted with BaCl2 to form BaSO4 in solution. Sulfate present.
