If g(x) = x2 + 4x with x 2, find g1(5).

g(x) = x^2 + 4x

x >= -2

finding inverse function of g(x)

let y = x^2 + 4x

switch x and y

x = y^2 + 4y

y = -2 +- sqrt ( x+4)

therefore, g^-1 (x) = -2 +- sqrt ( x+4 )

g^-1 (5) = plug x = 5 in g^-1(x)

g^-1 (5) = -2 +- sqrt ( 5+4) = -2 +3 = 1 and -2-3 = -5

hence,

g^-1 (5) = 1 , - 5
