Write reactions of hexaaquatitanium (III) chloride with the following reactants:

1. Granulate Zn

2. 2M NH3

3. acidified K2Cr2O7

4. acdified K2Cr2O7 with indicator N-phenylanthranilic acid

5. acidfied H2O2

Solution

Reactions of hexaaquatitanium chloride

1. granulated Zn

Zn reduced Ti3+ (TiCl3) in solution to Ti which in aqueous medium gets oxidized to Ti(OH)2 and gives off H2 gas

3Zn + 2Ti3+ --> 3Zn2+ + Tl

Ti + 2H2O --> Ti(OH)2 + H2(g)

2. 2M NH3

in basic medium Ti3+ form colored oxides of Ti.

4Ti3+ + 12OH- ---> 2Ti2O3 + 6H2O

3. acidified K2Cr2O7

gives green color solution

forms H2Cr2O7 an oxidant, oxidized Ti3+ to Ti4+

6TiCl3 + K2Cr2O7 + 6HCl --> 6TCl4 + 2CrCl3 + 2KCl + 7H2O

4. acidified K2Cr2O7 with indicator N-phenylanthranilic acid

gives blue color due to Ti3+ oxidation to Ti4+

5. acidified H2O2

oxidized Ti3+ to Tl4+ state giving red-orange coloration to the solution
