1. Why do we continue to use extra oxygen after exercise?

2. If someone has a problem with their sympathetic nervous system having depressed (insufficient) activity, how would this affect their exercise capacity? What would be different about their circulatory and respiratory system responses to exercise?

Solution

Ans 1. Our body performs aerobic oxidation of substrates usually to generate energy in the form of ATP. During strenuous exercises, when the muscles require greater energy for their contractions, body ks unable to fetch extra amount of oxygen to fulfill the energy demands of muscle. So in order to supply energy , it starts anaerobic oxidation which is insufficient to provide maximum energy to muscles. The lactic acid continues to accumulate and the muscle performance deteriorates. This is called as oxygen deficit.

Now when exercises are over, the person still breaths heavily because the lactic acid accumulated inside our body has to be oxidised . This is called as oxygen debt.
