Explain the differences between closed shops, union shops and agency shops.
Solution
Under a closed shop agreement, an employer employes only those workers who are members of the union. In case an employee leaves the union, the employer needs to fire the employee.
Under a union shop agreement, an employer is allowed to hire a non-union membersbut the members are required to join the union in a specified time (generally within 30 days). However, under this agreement, the employer cannot fire the employee if he/she refuses to join the union within that period as logn as the employee pays dues and fees to the union.
Under an agency shop agreements, non-union members are required to pay for the dues and fees charged by the union.
