Problem Page A car passes a landmark on a highway traveling

Problem Page A car passes a landmark on a highway traveling at a constant rate of 40 kilometers per hour. Two hours later, a second car passes the same landmark traveling in the same direction at 65 kilometers per hour. How much time after the second car passes the landmark will it overtake the first car? Do not do any rounding.

Solution

let it takes t hours for second car to pass the landmark

distance travelled by 2nd car to reach the landmark =65t

distance travelled by 1st car to reach the landmark = 40 (t+2)

both distances must be equal

40 (t+2) = 65t

40t + 80 = 65t

15 t = 80

t = 5.33

it takes 5.33 hours to overtake the first car
