If you were on another planet, say, Mars, which of the following, g_C or g_L, would change and which would stay constant? Explain the difference. Determine the acceleration of gravity required (meters per squared) to lift a 1 500 kg object at a uniform velocity when the force exerted is 3.580 times 10^3 lbf 8.90 times 10^3 N

Solution

Mass to be lifted, m = 1500 kg

Force exerted:

Case 1. 3.580*103 lbf

Case 2. 8.90*103 N

Case 1:

We know that,

Force exerted = 3.580*103 lbf

But, 1 lb = 0.453 kg

therefore, 3.580*103 lbf = 3.580*103*0.453*9.81 = 15909.27 N

We know that,

Force = Mass * Acceleration

Therefore, Acceleration = Force / mass = 15909.21 / 1500 = 10.60 m/s2

Case 2:

Force exerted = 8.90*103 N

We know that,

Force = Mass * Acceleration

Therefore, Acceleration = Force / mass = 8.90*103 / 1500 = 5.93 m/s2
