4. Kevin can clean a large aquarium tank in about 7 hours. When Kevin and Jesse work together, they can clean the tank in 4 hours. How long would it take Jesse to clean the tank if she works by herself? 5. Water flowing through both a small pipe and a large pipe can fill a water tank in 9 hours. Water flowing through the large pipe alone can fill the tank in 17 hours. Write an equation that can be used to find the amount of time t,in hours, it would take to fill the tank using only the small pipe. 6. The height in feet of a ball thrown by Alex is y x2 4x 5 where y is the horizontal distance (in feet) when the ball is thrown. Graph the function using a graphing utility. Then estimate the maximum height the ball reaches. 4(x 2) 2-3 from the parent functionf (x) x2
Solution
Ans(4):
Given that Kevin can clean the tank in 7 hours
then amount of tank cleaned in 1 hour for Kevin = 1/7
Let Jesse can clean the tank in x hours
then amount of tank cleaned in 1 hour for Jesse = 1/x
together both can clean in 4 hours
then amount of tank cleaned in 1 hour by both = 1/4
work done by kevin in 1 hour + work done by jesse in 1 hour =work done by both in 1 hour
1/7+1/x=1/4
1/x=1/4-1/7
1/x=3/28
x=28/3
Hence answer is 28/3 hours.
