Although World War II started in Europe, US did not join in until the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japanese forces. Women’s lives changed in different ways during World War II. The roles & responsibilities were expanded & new opportunities were created for women. In US men went to war or to work in factories in other parts of the country & women had to take outside jobs in addition to their homemaking responsibilities. Women worked in the shipyards & as street car conductors. They also worked on farms, some women joined the newly formed female branches of the military. Women got involved in growing food for the family (Victory gardens).

Though World War II was fought to bring essential human freedoms, but it failed to protect the home front liberties of blacks, Native Americans & Mexicans. The lynching of blacks & people of color occurred continued. In south great extent of segregation between blacks & white continued. The workers in industries & planation were underpaid & exploited by white landlords. The black workers were chained to work & their rights were not recognized. Mexican workers were exploited under Bracero program.

For Americans the World War II was a fight between freedom & fascism. People began abandoning the belief in differences among cultures. Racism was seen as an outdated idea & considered a psychological disorder. Americans became aware of their own racist behavior with Blacks, Native Americans & poor. They compared the colonialism around world to their own contradictory ways back at home.

After World War II many soldiers returning home faced unemployment & economic difficulties. Therefore the GI bill of rights was created to reward soldiers for their services in war. Veteran soldiers were able to attend colleges & their home mortgages were paid by government. But blacks were not able to receive full benefits of GI bill. Japanese sought benefits through GI bill, but were subjected to discrimination as they were relocated to internment camps & were subjected to military discipline.
