Introduction

The tremendous growth of technology has widespread environmental impacts, such as greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution.

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to:

Gain an introduction to and appreciation for the move toward ecofriendly technological innovation, with a focus on computer networking .

Questions

General Instructions: answer each of the following questions in 2-5 sentences. Write answers in your own words.

Part I. Read IEEE’s March 2016 issue of the institute

1) What does the term “green ICT” mean?

2) The total global greenhouse gas emissions from ICT are comparable to what other industry? What is the percentage of the worldwide total?

3) What was the focus of components of traditional communications networks? Why is this an issue today?

4) What is the GreenTouch? What are the quantitative end results of the possible impacts of their study?

5) What are two new technologies proposed by GreenTouch?

6) What are five sets of IEEE standards for greener ICT? Explain the purpose of each one.

Part 2. Read Green Internet of Things for Smart World

7) What does the term “smart world” mean?

8) What does the term “green IoT” mean, and how does it differ from (standard) IoT?

8) What are three technologies suggested by the authors to achieve green IoT?

Part 3. Personal Reflection

Write a paragraph with your personal reaction to the readings. Based on the articles you just read, what is your opinion on “greening” technology? Are the suggested methods feasible? What did you learn about the shift toward more sustainable technologies?

Solution

PART 1

1> ICT stands for global information and communications technology.when we say ICT equipment, we mean Desktop and Laptop PCS,Printers, scanners, copiers, projectors,Smart phones, PDAs, desktop phones, Data Centres and the equipment in them and etc.Like everything we do however ICT has an environmental impact, a much more significant one than most people realise, and building awareness of this is the first step to reducing that impact.
Green ICT is an initiative which is concerned with all these effects. We want to minimise the negative effects by encouraging equipment that:
is sustainably produced
lasts longer
wastes less energy
is used in an efficient way
is disposed of responsibly.

2> a>The total global greenhouse gas emissions from ICT are comparable to aviation industry.
b>The global information and communications technology (ICT) industry accounts for approximately 2 % of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions

3> The components that make up today’s traditional communication networks were built primarily with performance, not energy effi ciency, in mind. As more of everything comes online, the energy consumption of cellphone towers, set-top boxes, routers, and the rest of the infrastructure, to say nothing of data centers, is rising and so is the cost of running a network.

4> GreenTouch is a consortium of leading Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry, academic and non-governmental research experts dedicated to fundamentally transforming communications and data networks, including the Internet, and significantly reducing the carbon footprint of ICT devices, platforms and networks. The GreenTouch consortium concluded in 2015.

5> GreenTouch announces the development of two new technologies - the Virtual Home Gateway and Point-to-Point Optical Transceiver - that will reduce overall energy consumption in wireline access networks by an impressive 46 percent, which translates into a combined energy savings equivalent to the annual greenhouse gas emissions of 1.2 million passenger vehicles.

6> i) The IEEE 1888 Standard for Ubiquitous Green Community Control Network Protocol and the others in the suite are aimed at helping cities, houses, factories, and commercial buildings become green through the use of more efficient sensors; surveillance monitors; heating, ventilating, and air conditioning units; and lighting systems. The standard was initiated by a number of Chinese organizations to address their country’s surging energy use.

ii)The IEEE 1680 suite of standards for the environmental assessment of electronic products provides performance criteria that manufacturers must meet when designing environmentally friendly computers, monitors, tablets, and other products. For example, in the IEEE 1680.1 standard for PC products, more than 20 criteria are enumerated.

iii)IEEE also has standards for energy-efficient communications network protocols, which can have significant impact on a system’s overall energy dissipation.

iv)The IEEE 2030.5 Standard for Smart Energy Profile Application Protocol, for example, defines how utilities should manage the end user’s energy environment, including offering demand response, load control, and distributed generation.

v)Also in this group is the IEEE P1889 guide, which provides instructions for evaluating and testing the electronic performance of energy-saving devices.

PART 2

7> Smart world is envisioned as an era in which objects (e.g., watches, mobile phones, computers, cars, buses, and trains) can automatically and intelligently serve people in a collaborative manner. Paving the way for smart world, Internet of Things (IoT) connects everything in the smart world. With the rapid development of science and technology, the world is becoming ‘‘smart’’. Living in such a smart world [1], people will be automatically and collaboratively served by the smart devices (e.g., watches, mobile phones, computers), smart transportation (e.g., cars, buses, trains), smart environments (e.g., homes, offices, factories), etc.

8> Our world is consisted of various ‘‘things’’. As one of the enablers of smart world, internet of things (IoT) [2]–[7] targets to connect various objects (e.g., mobile phones, computers, cars, appliances) with unique addresses, to enable them interacting with each other and with the world. Further, green IoT targets at a sustainable smart world, by reducing the energy consumption of IoT

9>resource description framework (RDF), web ontology language (OWL),efcient XML interchange (EXI),

PART 3
sustainable development is the need of the hour so as to preserve our valuable resources & deliver the planet earth to the next generations as we got it from our ancestors.
NOTE : personal reflection is totally intended to be writen by the student and it is not ethical to make opinion based on other person\'s thoughts.
