8. A buffer is formed by adding 0.1 mole of NaC2Hs02 and 0.1 mole of HC2H:02 to a beaker of water. Write two separate equations showing how this buffer will consume the strong acid HCl and the strong base NaOH.
Solution
A buffer is made of a weak acid or weak base together with its conjugate. Here NaC2H3O2 and HC2H3O2 are conjugate acid base.
HCl will react with NaC2H3O2 to give HC2H3O2 which does not alter the pH of the solution.
Similarly, NaOH will react with HC2H3O2 to give NaC2H3O2 which does not alter the pH of the solution.
