Healthy People 2020 is a termed provided to a broad set of objectives inclusive of disease prevention and health promotion for the Nation to achieve over the first decade of the new century. The main aim of this is to increase quality and years of healthy people and to eliminate health disparities. The objectives are set based on the high-priority public health issues in US. It is created by the scientists present in both inside and outside of Government. The proposed objectives help everyone to understand how healthy are the people of the Nation and the changes required to improve the public health.

The focused areas which are prioritized are:

Oral health includes prevent and control oral and craniofacial diseases, conditions, and injuries, and improve access to preventive services and dental care. The wellbeing of the teeth, the mouth, and the surrounding craniofacial (skull and face) is central to a person’s complete health and well-being. The various Oral and craniofacial diseases are Dental caries (tooth decay), Periodontal (gum) diseases, Cleft lip and palate, Oral and facial pain, Oral and pharyngeal (mouth and throat) cancers, Xerostomia (dry mouth). Good oral health develops a person’s ability to speak, smile, smell, taste, touch, chew, swallow, and make facial expressions to show feelings and emotions. However, oral diseases cause significant pain and disability for many people.

2.            Obesity:

This goal is to promote health and reduce chronic disease risk occurs because of obesity. It also provided awareness regarding the consumption of healthful diets and achievement and maintenance of healthy body weights. The objectives also highlight the efforts to change diet and maintain weight should address individual behaviors, as well as the policies and environments that support these behaviors in settings such as schools, worksites, health care organizations, and communities. Diet and body weight are related to health status. Good nutrition is important to the growth and development of children. Unhealthy weight gain (Obesity) is a problem throughout the population. However, among adults, the frequency is highest for middle-aged people. Among children and adolescents, the commonness of obesity is highest among older and Mexican American children and non-Hispanic black girls.

3. Tobacco Use:

The tobacco use should be controlled to reduce illness, disability, and death related to tobacco use and passive smoke exposure. Literature survey about the health effects of tobacco use reports that it has increased greatly since 1964. Since 1964, more than 20 million Americans have died because of smoking. Tobacco uses cause diseases like Cancer, Heart disease and stroke, Lung diseases, ectopic pregnancy, premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth, reduced fertility in women, and erectile dysfunction; and birth defects, including clept-lip and/or cleft palate, More severe asthma attacks, Respiratory infections, Ear infections, Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). In addition smokeless tobacco causes various oral health problems. The largest avoidable cause of death and disease in the United States is Tobacco. Each year, approximately 480,000 death cases are reported from tobacco-related illnesses. Furthermore, 16 million suffer from at least one disease caused by smoking. Smoking-related illness in US also have economic burden such as it costs more than $300 billion each year.

4. Access to healthcare

This goal is to improve access to comprehensive, quality health care services. Access to health services means the timely use of personal health services to achieve the best health consequences. This area focuses on four components of access to care: coverage, services, timeliness, and workforce. Access to comprehensive, quality health care services is important for various issues such as:

a.     the achievement of health equity and

b.    for increasing the quality of a healthy life for everyone..

Access to health care services in the United States is unreliable as many people do not receive the appropriate and timely care they need. So, this goal will help to improve the quality.
