For the following highway network system, determine the maximal flow in vehicles per hour.

The highway commission is considering adding highway section 3–4 to permit a flow of 2000 vehicles per hour or, at an additional cost, a flow of 3000 vehicles per hour. What is your recommendation for the 3–4 arc of the network?

Solution

Current maximum flow = 6,000 vehicles per hour.

Highway section 3-4 will increase flow capacity by an additional 3,000 vehicles per hour. This will make the total systems flow = 8,000 vehicles per hour.

Increasing the arc 3-4 to 2,000 vehicles will also increase the total systems flow to 8,000 vehicles per hour.

Thus, my recommendation for the 3-4 arc is 2,000 vehicles per hour as there is no additional cost involved and the total systems flow is same (i.e 8,000) as in case with 3,000 vehicles per hour.
