Consider the following three step process 9 minutes 2 machin

Consider the following three step process:

9 minutes
2 machines
60%

What is the utilization percent at Step 2?

Enter your answer in decimal form, e.g, if your answer is 12.34%, enter in 0.1234

Step 1 Step 2 Step 3

9 minutes
2 machines
60%

6 minutes
1 machine
80% yield
10 minutes
1 machine
90%

Solution

Since Step 1 :

Each of the 2 machine in step 1 can process each item in 9 minutes

Thus, Processing time of Step 1 without considering yield factior = 9 /2 = 4.5 minutes

Therefore, Effective processing time of step 1 after considering yield factor of 60% = 4.5/0.6 = 7.5 minutes

Step 2 :

Processing time of step 2 using 1 machine and without considering yield = 6 minutes

Thus, effctive processing time of step 2 after taking into consideration 80% yield factor = 6/0.8 = 7.5 minutes

Step 3 :

Processing time of Step 3 using 1 machine and without considering yield = 10 minutes

Therefore, effective processing time while considering 90% yield = 10 / 0.9 = 11.11 minutes

The bottleneck operation with highst processing time is therefore step 3. Since it is the capacity of bottleneck operation which decides capacity of a system , the capacity of the system is 11.11 minutes ( i.e same as capacity of Step 3 )

Utilization percentage at Step 2 = Effective processing capacity of Step 2 / Capacity of the system x 100 = 7.5/ 11.11 x 00 =67.50%      (UTILIZATION PERCENTAGE AT STEP 2 IS 0.675)

Thus , Utilization percent at Step 2

= Effective processing time at step 2 / Effective processing time at step 1 x 100

= 7.5/7.5 x 100

= 100%

UTILIZATION PERCENT AT STEP 2 = 1 ( by entering answer in decimal form )

Consider the following three step process: 9 minutes 2 machines 60% What is the utilization percent at Step 2? Enter your answer in decimal form, e.g, if your a
