Solution
Suppose Josh had x dollars in beginning.
for part a)
After first jump he had $2x after getting his money doubled by Sam but had to give Sam 48$ so net money left with him after 1st jump=2x-48
So,similarly second time,Josh is left with 2(2x-48)-48=4x-144
After 3rd jump,he is left with 2(4x-144)-48=8x-336
Given he was left with nothing so,8x-336=0
so ,x=336/8=42$
for part b)
After 4th jump he is left with 2(8x-336)-48 which is given to be zero.
so,16x-720=0
so,x=45$
