Explain the important features of the Bohr model for the atom.

Solution

In 1913, Niels Bohr proposed the Bohr\'s model regarding the atomic structure. The important features of the Bohr\'s model for the atom are as follows -

(a) An atom consists of nucleus which is situated at its centre.

(b) An atom also consists of electrons that revolve around the nucleus in definite circular orbits known as Shells or Energy levels.

(c) A fixed amount of energy is associated with each energy level.

(d) The energy levels are designated as K, L, M, N etc or numbered as 1, 2, 3, 4 etc., (here K energy level or 1st energy level is the energy level which is closest to the nucleus)

(e) An electron can jump from one energy level to another. If electron jumps from lower to higher energy level, it       absorbs energy whereas there is emission of energy during jumping of electron from higher to lower enrgy level.

(f) There is neither loss nor gain of energy during movement of electron in any of these energy levels.
