Ans. Yes, Laura’s strategic use and display of emotions serve to protect her. As she described the whole environment as hostile where nobody especially managers like to see others happy. In the situation, where your manager doesn’t like to see any emotional attachment to any situation you have to hide your emotions especially in case of any wrong doing. She also described that in these type of situation you have to cater your emotions accordingly in order to survive. It shows that she used her strategies for controlling emotions to protect her.
3. Assuming that Laura’s description is accurate, how would you react to the organization’s culture?
Ans. I will try to communicate to the upper management about the prevailed wrong practice in the organization. I will also take the feedback from other colleagues and staffs about the behavior of the organisation. If nothing will work then I will try to accommodate myself with the environment as long I can. Finally, I will try to get a new job, till then, I will try to keep workplace friendly and more productive.
4. Research show that acts of co-workers (37 percent) and management (22 percent) cause more negative emotions for employees that do acts of customers (7 percent). What can Laura’s company do to change its emotional climate?
Ans. The company’s environment is completely negative. People are not working there but surviving there. They are not talking with each other, there is no emotional support. So, the very first step that Laura’s company should take is to make the environment friendlier. They can conduct social activities, employee get together, annual company’s functions and other social activities where employees can interact and can become friendlier. Second step is to create an employee’s grievances system. This system should be independent to reduce the fear of getting trapped. Third step is to make managers responsible for their team. Other steps can be taken like, any separation from company should be monitored and proper feedback system should be developed. A thanks giving system should be develop to make employees more interactive and cooperative.
