explain why some mutations do not involve the gain or loss of genes but still change a cells behavior?

Solution

Nucleotide ide base substitutions are one if tge types of mutations where there would be no gain or loss of genes. If the mutation is of addition of deletion of few nucleotides then there would be frame shuft mutations which result in gain or loss of genes.

Even though there is no gain or loss of genes, a single amini acid change due to the change in a single Nucleotide will result in an entirely different protein with different properties. As a result, the cell function changes. Example is sickle cell disease. Here the sixth amino acid glutamic acid is replaced by valine. As a result sickling of rbc occurs and its oxygen carrying capacity, ability to pass through capillaries changes.
