Solution

1) vendor sells hot dog and bag of potato chips.

customer buys 4 hot dogs and 5 bags of potato chips for $ 12.00

customer buys 3 hot bags and 4 bags of potato chips for $ 9.25

Let the price of hot dog be $x and $y of potato chips bag

So, customer buys 4 hot dogs and 5 bags of potato chips for $ 12.00:

4*x + 5*y = $12.00 ----(1)

3 hot bags and 4 bags of potato chips for $ 9.25

3*x + 4*y = $ 9.25 -----(2)

Solve equation 1 and 2 by elimination method:

multiply equation 1 by 3 and equation 2 by 4:

12x + 15y = 36.00

12x +16y = 37.00

---------------(-)

-y = -1 ; y =1

4x +5y = 12 ; 4x +5*1 = 12

4x = 7 ; x= 7/4

x = 1.75

Price of hot dog $ 1.75 and price of potato chips be $ 1.0
