Imagine that you are a general education math teacher. One of your students, Rosa, has a visual disability. Although she has mastered all the math concepts presented this year, she is having difficulty learning fractions. You believe that Rosa has the ability to master the concept but that you need to present it in a different manner. What would you do to help Rosa? Whose assistance would you seek?

Solution

Rosa knows math concepts well so I will use division to explain her the concept of fractions.

A fraction is nothing but the remainder of a division divided by the divisor. Since remainder cannot be divided further by the divisor (and hence the name \"remainder\" by what remains) you need to do no calculation and simply write the remainder and below it you write the divisor. These remainder and divisor are separeted by a small hypen (or minus like sign) which is indicative of a fraction.
So, a fraction is basically two numbers placed in a vertical column (on the top being the remainder and bottom being the divisor) separated by a simple dash or line or a minus sign.

For instance one can ask Rosy to divide 11 by 4; She will get the quotient as 2 & remainder as 3 since 11= 2*4 + 3

So you can write this as a mixture of quotient and fraction. She will say it is 2.75 where as in fraction it is given by writing the quotient first (2) and beside it writing the fraction in the manner as descriebd in the above paragraph. Place the remainder (3) above and divisor (4) below and separate it by a small dash giving 2 3/4
Explain Rosy that 3 when divided by 4 will give her 0.75 but if you dont have to represent it as a decimal you can represent it as a mixed fraction.
