(Please answer all questions)

1.       Have your partner sit in a chair and have them stand up and sit down while you palpate their knee extensor and flexor muscles, when do you feel the quadriceps and hamstrings working during the movement? How are these muscles working to cause the movement.

2.       Why is it important to know that the rectus femoris is a two joint muscle?

3.       You have a person who is unable to fully extend their knee and can only get to 15 deg. From full extension. Name 3 possibilities on why they may not be able to full extend their knee. Think about the structures around and that move the knee when answering.

4.       You are going to passively stretch some one’s hamstring muscles, how will you position them to get maximal stretch on the hamstrings? (be specific) Why are you placing them in this position?

5.       Which muscles in the knee are most important to develop to try and prevent an ACL tear, why? What about a PCL tear?

Solution

1. The thigh has three sets of strong muscles : the hamstring muscles in the back of the thigh, the quadriceps in the front and the adductor muscles on the inside. The quadriceps and hamstring muscles work in combination to straighten and bend the leg. The adductor muscles pull the legs together.

Most of the thigh muscles are contained within two large groups of muscles referred to as the quadriceps, which extend the leg at the knee and the hamstrings, which flex the leg at the knee.

When you are sitting in a chair, your hamstring muscle is working. Your Quadricep muscle is working during standing uo from sitting position.

The hamstrings cross both the hips and knees, they are able to contribute to movements at joints. As you are bending or sitting in a chair , your hamstrings assist your gluteal muscles by controlling flexion at the hips. As you rise up , your hamstrings contract and work against resistance to extend your hips.

Not only are the hamstrings assisting with hip extension, they are also responsible for working against the quadriceps to protect the knees. When your hips and knees are simultaneously extending, such as when you are standing and sitting in a chair continuously, the hamstrings are responsible for countering the forces of the quadriceps that are pushing the knees forward. Quadriceps helps during standing. it helps to strighten the knee.
