2. (a) Name all polarization mechanisms possible in NaCl? (Hint: possibilities are electronic, ionic and orientation polarization). (5 pts) (b) A charge of 2.0 x 10-10 C is to be stored on each plate of a parallel plate capacitor having an area of 650 mm2 and a plate separation of 4.0 mm. Determine the following- remember to include units. i. What electric field must be applied if a material with dielectric constant of 4.5 is positioned within the ii. What is the capacitance of the capacitor in part (i)\'? iii. What is the polarization for the capacitor in part (i) iv. What is the surface charge density (also referred to as the dielectric displacement) for the capacitor in part (i) v. Which material will have the higher dielectric constant, pure SiO2 or MgO-SiO2? (No explanation necessary)

Solution

2)a) electronic and ionic polarization

b)i)electric field=(charge density/permitivity)=2.0X10-10  /(650X10-6X4.5X8.854X10-12)=3.47X104

ii)Capacitance = k x 0 x area / separation

=(650X10-6X4.5X8.854X10-12)/(4X10-3)

=6.47X10-12 F

iv)surface chage density=2.0X10-10  /650X10-6=3.076X10-7

v)MgO-SiO2

 2. (a) Name all polarization mechanisms possible in NaCl? (Hint: possibilities are electronic, ionic and orientation polarization). (5 pts) (b) A charge of 2.0
