A metal conduit will be used as a pathway for wiring through a concrete block. The conduit is a 6 foot long rod with an outer diameter of 2.6 inches and an inner diameter of 2.4 inches. What is the volume of metal in the conduit in cubic centimeters?

Solution

Volume of the metal in the conduit = r2outerh- r2innerh

Radius of outer conduit = 2.6/2 = 1.3 inches

Since 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres

1.3 inches = 2.54 X 1.3 centimetres

Radius of outer conduit = 3.302 centimetres

Radius of inner conduit = 2.4/2 X 2.54= 3.048 centimetres

Since 1 feet = 30.45 centimetres

Volume of the metal in the conduit = (3.302 )2X6X30.48- (3.048)2X6X30.48

                                                                = X 1993.98- X 1699.01

                                                                      = 294.97 cubic centimetres.
