Could you use pulse measurement to replace the stethoscope? Why or why not? What are the differences between blood pressure obtained at the three different sites (upper arm, wrist, and leg)? What explains these differences?

Solution

Pulse measurement and stethoscope both use to measure blood pressure. But pulse measurement has limited uses, and provide rough idea of blood pressure. Both techniques can measure only systolic blood pressure. Stethoscope has advantage that it can measure blood pressure accurately, also it can measure other sounds of body, and it can measure blood pressure in noisy environment. Therefore, it is impossible to replace stethoscope with traditional pulse measurement, in fact now electronic stethoscope is in race with traditional stethoscope.

Blood pressure from wrist has the lowest quality amongst the three. Wrist measurement provides rough idea. Many researches also emphasis on not to measure blood pressure by Wrist Blood Pressure Monitors, because these are less accurate than cuff used monitors. The main fact behind the measurement of blood pressure is how much the measuring position close to heart. Upper arm is closer than wrist and leg. Therefore upper arm measurement is more reliable than others are. However, under circumstances (like patient is unable to sit properly and other reasons) upper arm measurement for blood pressure finds less accurate than other methods.
