If x is nonzero and x1y use cy2bya0 and y b b24ac2c to solve

If x is nonzero and x=1/y, use cy2+by+a=0 and y= -b ±b2-4ac/2c to solve the equation ax2+bx+c=0 for x.

Solution

Since y = [-b ±(b2-4ac)]/2c , therefore, [-b ±(b2-4ac)] = 2cy. Further, we have ax2+bx+c = 0 so that, on using the quadratic formula, x = [-b±(b2-4ac)]/2a = 2cy/2a = (c/a)y = (c/a)/x = c/ax . Then x2   = c/a. Hence x = ±( (c/a). (Since x = 1/y, hence y = 1/x).

The answer is x = ±( (c/a).
