Write the electron configuration and all the possibilities for angular momenta in the notation^2S+1L_J. for oxygen O(8). What is the prefered one according to Hund rules?

Electron configuration of oxygen = 1 S 22S 22P4

Value of L is = 1+ 1+ 0-1 = 1

L = 1 means it is P orbit

All possible Values of S are = (1/2)+(1/2) to (1/2) -(1/2)

                                        = 1 , 0

All possible values of J are ( L+S ) to (L-S)

                                     = (1 +1) to(1-1) if S = 1 i.e., J = 2,1,0 if S=1

                                     = ( 1-0)   if S= 0 i.e., J = 1 if S= 0

Therefore term symbols are , 3 P 2 , 3 P 1 , 3 P 0      Since 2S+ 1 = 2(1) + 1 = 3

and 1 P 1    Since 2S+ 1 = 2(0) + 1 = 1
