In terms of function how are lysosomes different from autophagosomes?

Both lysosomes and autophagosomes are intracellular enzyme containing organelles. These organelles have a unique property that they contain hydrolyzing enzymes which can digest virtually all the cell or any invading species. However, there are some fundamental differences between them as discussed below:

1. Nature of action: Although both these organelles are involved in digestion of cell/cellular parts by hydrolyzing enzymes, lysosomes are involved in cellular protection from invading species, toxins etc whereas autophagosomes are involved in digesting the whole cell itself.

2. The signal for lysis: Whereas the signal for hydrolytic lysis for lysosomes arises from intracellular invasion of foreign material, the activatio of autophagosomes comes from stress/stimulus which directs cellular apoptosis. Thus, autophagosomes are actually involved in cellular destrcution.

Thus, whereas the function of both these organelles seems similar, they are different in their mode of action and the effects produced.
