Traffic signs are regulated by the Manual on Uniform Traffic

Traffic signs are regulated by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The perimeter of a rectangular traffic sign is 92 inches. Also, its length is 10 inches longer than its width. Find the dimensions of this sign. The width of the sign is in. The length of the sign is in.

Solution

Given that

Perimeter of rectangular traffic sign = 92 inches

Length is 10 inches longer than width

Let width = x inches

Length = 10 inches longer than width

Length = (x + 10) inches

We know that

Perimeter of rectangle = 2(length + width)

  Perimeter of rectangle = 2(x+10 + x) = 2(2x + 10) inches

Hence ,

  2(2x + 10) = 92

2x + 10 = 92/2

2x + 10 = 46

2x = 36

x = 36/2

x = 18

If x = 18 then x + 10 = 18 + 10 = 28

Therefore ,

Width of sign = 18 inches

Length of sign = 28 inches
